Common questions

Why are my contact lenses uncomfortable by the afternoon?

Short answer

Why are my contact lenses uncomfortable by the afternoon.

A contact lens sits in your tear film, so it is only ever as comfortable as that tear film is. Lenses that were fine for years and now fail by mid-afternoon are one of the most reliable signs of evaporative dry eye — the lens has not changed, the tear layer holding it has.

What the lens is actually sitting on

A soft lens rests on the tear film and is covered by it. The oil layer on top slows evaporation across both the lens and the eye. When the meibomian glands stop releasing oil properly, that layer thins, the surface dries faster, and the lens starts to feel like an object rather than something you forgot you were wearing.

That is why the classic account is "my lenses are fine in the morning and I want them out by four o’clock". Dryness is cumulative through the day.

What usually helps

Treating the glands is what changes the underlying picture, and people who complete a course of treatment commonly find they get more comfortable hours out of the same lenses.

Alongside that, there are practical things worth reviewing with your optometrist: the lens material and replacement schedule, how many hours a day you wear them, and whether daily disposables suit you better. Preservative-free drops can be used with lenses in; many preserved drops should not be, so check the packaging rather than assuming.

Taking lenses out for the last stretch of the evening gives the surface a chance to recover, and glasses for screen-heavy afternoons are not a defeat.

Do I have to give up lenses?

Usually not. Most people in this position are not failing at contact lens wear — they have an untreated lid problem that makes lens wear harder than it needs to be. The point of treatment is to get comfortable wear back, not to talk you out of lenses.

If you are considering stopping lenses altogether because of comfort, that is worth one assessment first.

Where treatment starts

Diagnosing dry eye disease starts with an eye exam.

Visit one of our experienced optometrists to get started on your journey to true dry eye relief. The exam is what separates blocked oil glands from allergy, from lid margin inflammation, from everything else that produces the same symptoms — and it is what tells us whether the treatments we offer will help you.
